Google adds timeline view to Sheets as part of Smart Canvas

Last year, Google introduced the Smart Canvas to Workspace. This has been a reimagined approach to working with others and has seen steady improvements with new features for all apps under the Workspace umbrella. The latest feature added by Google blends two popular productivity tools together – Google Sheets and Smart Canvas.

Google Sheets is introducing an interactive timeline view that can help you be more productive and keep track of your projects. This visual layer on Google Sheets shows project information like the task’s start date, description, and owner. The timeline makes it easy to interact with your project data and can also help when running marketing campaigns, milestones, schedules, cross-team collaboration, and more. If you click on a card in the timeline, the sidebar will show you more information about the task as well as looking at your timeline at different points in time (day, week, month, quarters, year).

Users can create a timeline using the Insert > Timeline tool. They will choose a data range and adjust the options in the sidebar to generate the timeline. Once they’ve created one, they’ll be able to view it in different ways, including at a certain time, on the current date, or by changing how it looks through adjustments such as spacing or colors.
