If you’re not already using Gmail, now may be the time to sign up. It’s one of the most popular email services on the internet, and it offers a variety of different chat features that can be useful for online communication. In this article, we’ll show you how to set up Gmail chat on your computer.
First, you’ll need to install the Google Chrome browser extension. Once it’s installed, open Chrome and click on the three lines in the top right corner of the browser window (or press Ctrl+Shift+I). This will open a new tab called “New Incognito Window.”
Now click on the gear icon in the top right corner of this new tab and select “Settings.” Under “Advanced settings,” pop open the “Privacy & security” section and make sure that “Send all browsing data to Google” is enabled.

To start using Chat in Gmail, open the Settings page and click on the Chat link near the top. You’ll see a list of features you can enable. Enable the ones you want and make sure your microphone and camera are turned on. Then enter your chat partner’s information and click Join.
If you’re using a phone with Chat enabled, there are a few extra steps you’ll need to take before initiating a call or participating in a chat. First, open the Phone app and sign in. Next, head to Messaging > All chats > tapped chat name > enter phone number. If you’re familiar with the secure messaging app Signal, then you’re already familiar with one of its biggest rivals: Google’s Gmail chat. But what many people don’t realize is that Gmail chat is also capable of encrypting your conversations using the open source encryption protocol, OTR (Off-The-Record). In this article, we’ll teach you how to set up Gmail chat and encrypted conversations using OTR, so you can keep your conversations safe and private.
First things first: If you don’t have an OTR server installed yet, now is a great time to do so. (We’ll walk through how to set that up later in this guide.) Once you’ve got everything ready, logged into your Gmail account and opened up a conversation with someone you want to encrypt, click on the three lines in the top right corner of the chat window. Twitter, Line, and KakaoTalk have become popular for chatting with coworkers or friends. However, if you want to set up a group chat with your Gmail contacts, you’ll need to use a different chat application.
Using Gmail Chat
Google Mail has a built-in chat feature that lets you send and receive messages with other Gmail users. To start chatting, open Google Mail and click the contact list icon in the top left corner. (If there’s no contact list icon, click More…) In the contact list box, select the people you want to chat with and click Add (+). Click the arrow next to the conversation box on the right to open a menu listing all of your messages with that person. To reply to a message, select it and click Reply (+) orReply All (+). To ignore a message, select it and click Ignore (+). You can also quickly reply to all messages by clicking All Messages (+) at the bottom of the screen.
To end a chat session, either click Exit Chat (+) or click Cancel Chat on the conversations tab.
Note: You can’t chat with people who are using another chat application or who aren’t signed in to their Gmail account.
Excluding certain contact
If you want to chat with someone using Gmail (or any other email service), you’ll need to set it up. Follow these steps:
1. Open your Gmail account.
2. In the top right corner of the main screen, click Settings.
3. Under “More Settings,” click Chat.
4. On the “Chat” tab, click Add a Contact.
5. Enter the email address or phone number of the person you want to chat with, and click OK.
6. If you want to continue chatting with this person even if you close your account or switch computers, open Messages on your phone or laptop and sign in with your Gmail account.
Private gmail contacts
If you want to chat with your Gmail contacts using Google Chat, you’ll first need to set up a Gmail account. Once you have a Gmail account, login and click the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen. Select Settings and then Account Settings. Under ‘Chat settings,’ make sure that ‘Use Google Chat’ is selected and enter your chat partner’s email address. Click Save Changes.
Now open Google Chat on your computer and type your chat partner’s email address into the text field at the bottom of the screen. You’ll be prompted to sign in with your Gmail account. Type in your PIN and click Sign In. You’ll now be chatting with your chat partner!
