Google App Script

Google App Script is a software technology running across the vast majority of Google’s online offerings and services, including Google Docs and Spreadsheets, Gmail, Calendar, Contacts and more. This article will teach the many different ways you can integrate App Script into your own website or web application.

How to Write an App Script

Google App Script is a programming language that lets you create custom web applications using Google Docs. This tutorial will show you how to create an application that uses Google Maps to find nearby food and drink establishments.

First, create a new project in Google Docs. In the new project, select “App Script” from the sidebar menu and click “Create new App Script Project”. For this tutorial, we willcall our project “FindFood”.

Next, open the project in your favorite editor and add the following code to the files main.js and map/script.js:

What Does an App Script Do?

Google App Script allows you to create executable code snippets. Code snippets can then be used in conjunction with Google Sheets and Docs to automate tasks. They can also be used to interact with services like YouTube, Gmail, and Google Drive.

Implementation of an App Script

In this tutorial, we will be implementing an App Script which will allow us to fetch information from a Google Sheets spreadsheet. We will use the flask web framework and employ the Jinja2 template engine to create our script. By the end of this tutorial, you should have a basic understanding of how to create and use App Scripts in your own web applications.

Requirements

To complete this tutorial, you will need:

-A Google Sheets account

-A Flask webframework installation

-Jinja2 installed

– app.js file (see below) created in your project directory

– A Google Cloud Platform project created (if you don’t have one yet)

If you’re unfamiliar with any of these tools, we recommend that you read our beginner’s guide to Creating a Flask Web Application first.

1. Create a new file called app.js and paste the following code into it:

var google = require(‘google’); var fs = require(‘fs’); // Connect to your Google Sheets instance var sheet = new google.sheets.DataSheet(); // Get a JSON representation of the data in Sheet sheet.load( ‘http://docs.google.com

Conclusion

If you’re looking to develop a more automated process for your business, Google App Script might be the right tool for you. App Script allows you to write code that runs on the backend of Google Apps (G Suite), thereby automating tasks and making your work life easier. For example, you could create an app script that calls an external database every day morning to extract data and store it in a separate spreadsheet. In this way, EVERYTHING would be automatically handled by your code without having to think about it!
