Google’s Material You redesign: A new look for popular web services

Google has begun rolling out a new Material You design for its desktop web versions of popular apps and services. The account switcher, which allows users to switch and manage accounts, has transitioned from a sharp, boxy design to a nested rectangle layout with rounded corners. This update has been applied to a majority of Google products, including Search, Maps, Calendar, Photos, Drive, and Docs.

The new account switcher features a circular profile picture for the active account, a big button to manage it, and other Google accounts that have been added. Users also have the option to add more accounts, as well as a button to sign out of all accounts at once. Additionally, there are links to view Google’s policy documentation and indicators for enterprise accounts. The entire menu now also features a more pronounced drop shadow.

The new design has been spotted showing up for multiple users on the web, including enterprise-managed Google Workspace accounts. Like the old account switcher, this new UI uses lighter or darker backgrounds to match the theme being used. However, it should be noted that dark mode is not yet available in some Google web products, such as Photos and Maps.

Google introduced Material You with Android 12 and has been working to adapt its essential Android apps, such as Messages, to the new design guidelines. The company is now bringing the same aesthetic to its desktop web versions of popular services. This redesign aligns with Google’s brand identity and adds a touch of the trendy Material You design that has been adopted by many Android apps in recent times.

Overall, this update to the account switcher offers a more visually pleasing and user-friendly experience for managing multiple accounts on Google’s web products. It’s a small but significant change that shows Google’s commitment to constantly improving the user experience and updating its design to stay current with design trends.
